Objective
A thigh lift is a procedure that involves the removal of excess skin and fat from either the inner or outer thighs. This is often desirable after substantial or bariatric weight loss or in individuals for whom dieting and exercise have failed to reduce excess tissue in their upper thighs. Liposuction may be used as an adjunct to the recontouring of the inner thigh. If you are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a moderate weight, a thigh lift can help you regain the youthful thigh contours you desire.
When to Consider a Thigh Lift?
  • If you want your thighs to have a better, more proportional contour and a firmer look and feel.
  • If you have undergone bariatric surgery or massive weight loss.
  • If you are distressed about loose, flabby skin on your thighs.
  • If you have difficulty fitting into clothing because of heavy thighs.
Procedure

The procedure selected depends on the area of the thigh which requires improvement. An inner or medial thigh lift serves to correct excess skin and fatty tissue on the upper, inner thigh. Here incisions are placed on the inside of the thigh, along the groin crease and a wedge of excess skin and fat is removed. The thigh is then lifted and suspended in position using certain suture techniques and the incision is closed with absorbable sutures.

In cases where excess skin and fatty tissue extends lower down in the thigh, a vertical thigh lift is then better suited. Here an incision is made vertically along the inside of the thigh from the groin crease to the inside of the knee. The excess skin and fat along the length of the inner thigh is then removed and the wound closed with absorbable sutures.

An outer thigh lift is suited for patients whose fatty deposits are located on the outer or lateral thigh. Here an incision is made from the groin crease anteriorly around to the back. Excess skin and fat on the outer thigh may then be directly removed and the outer thigh lifted to a more appropriate position. The incisions are then closed with absorbable sutures. Occasionally, these thigh lift procedures may be performed together to address excess skin and fatty deposits on the inner and outer thighs.

Thigh lift surgery may take anywhere from two to four hours, depending on the specific procedure performed. The surgeon will help decide which thigh lift procedure is best suited for you. Thigh lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and patients are typically discharged from the clinic later the same day. Drains are usually placed following a thigh lift and are typically removed several days after the procedure.

After Care

When your surgery is complete, dressing or bandages may be applied to your incisions. A compression garment is often used to minimize swelling and support the new contour of your thighs as you heal.

Most people are advised to take seven to 10 days off work for recovery time. During this period, patients must remain in either a reclining or standing position to help the healing process. Some bruising and swelling may occur after surgery, which could last up to one month. The majority of patients recover well after a thigh lift, with most returning to all normal activities within four to six months.
